Information for Visitors

The site is closed to members of the public for safety and security reasons while it is decommissioned.

There is a public viewing area nearby, with car parking and interpretative panels. Please note for the security of the site, armed police will be patrolling the immediate vicinity.

Flying a UAV/drone within the restricted airspace of the Dounreay site is prohibited, If you observe someone preparing to fly, or flying a drone, then please report this immediately to the Civil Nuclear Constabulary on 01847 802130.

An exhibition about the history of the site is a feature of Caithness Horizons in the centre of Thurso. This is a visitor centre that incorporates the town’s museum. It is open Monday to Saturday from 10am until 5pm and on Sunday’s from April to September.  See the website.
