Dounreay’s met tower comes down

Dounreay’s old meteorological tower that once towered over the site was dismantled over a weekend.

The tower was 55 metres high and was the site’s main communication tower, as well as housing the meteorological system, for a number of years.

After almost eight months of paperwork, organisation and relocation of communications and environmental systems elsewhere on site, the demolition team could get to work.

JGC, and their sub-contractor Simpsons, safely and efficiently dismantled the tower by cutting it into several pieces, before it was size-reduced and disposed of as recyclable waste.

A total of 12 tonnes of steel was recycled from the project.
