Secretary of State visits Dounreay

Michael Moore, Secretary of State for Scotland in the UK Government, today visited Dounreay to see how the nation’s experiment with fast breeder reactors is being dismantled.

During his brief visit to the site, he met senior officials from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd, and held private talks with trade union representatives.

Afterwards, he traveled to nearby Thurso for meetings with the local chamber of commerce and regeneration partnership.

He discussed progress to develop new jobs to replace those being lost with the closure of Dounreay.

DSRL managing director Simon Middlemas said: “It was an opportunity for the Secretary of State to see for himself the value of the decommissioning work being carried out here and the progress we are making to reduce the hazards and shut down the site.”

Mr Moore was in Caithness at the invitation of John Thurso, MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross.
