Opening up the nuclear market for companies

Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd is working with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Scotland's enterprise network to make it easier for companies to win work in the nuclear marketplace.
Company representatives attended a one-day workshop with the NDA and site licence companies to explore ways to help small and medium-size enterprises.
Among proposals to emerge are:
- A central repository for information for opportunities across the NDA estate
- Standardisation of pre-qualification questionnaires
- More open days and meet-the-buyer events
These and other proposals will be shared by the NDA and its site licence companies at an event in the autumn aimed at existing and potential new sub-contractors seeking work in the industry.
The drive to make it easier for small and medium-sized companies to do business in the NDA estate will be highlighted at a one-day “tendering for nuclear contracts masterclass” for the supply chain being held in Inverness by Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Scottish Enterprise next month.
Colin Doull, contracts manager DSRL, will be among the speakers at the event on September 15.
Approximately two-thirds of Dounreay's annual spend of £150m is put out to tender.
NDA currently spends more than £2bn a year across its estate in the UK. The energy policy of the UK Government is expected to lead to a number of new nuclear power stations being built in England and Wales at a cost of some £4bn each. An international collaboration to develop nuclear fusion is also generating new market opportunities.
