Top engineering award for shaft clean-up project
October 20, 2009
Dounreay’s multi award-winning shaft clean-up project has earned yet another top engineering award.
The British Construction Industry awards are widely regarded as the industry's 'Oscars'. They are the most rigorously judged awards in the construction sector, with all thirty-five short listed projects visited by members of the judging panel.
DSRL’s shaft clean-up team along with BAM Ritchies, the contractor who carried out the work, scooped the top spot for the Civil Engineering Award for projects valued between £3m and £50 million.
The first phase of the scheme to decommission the shaft and nearby waste silo took three years to complete and enveloped the 65-metre deep waste site in a grout “sock”. The grout was injected into rock fissures to create a 10-metre wide barrier around the shaft, greatly reducing the amount of groundwater that can get into the waste and eliminating the need for a £200m treatment plant during the emptying stage.
According to the judges, the shaft clean-up team delivered: “an extraordinarily innovative and complex project delivered with extreme care, confidence and total team collaboration. “
They felt the project tackled all the potential 'show stoppers' with a great deal of strength and maturity and pushed beyond the boundaries of what had been technically deliverable and fundamentally advanced the technique of wet grouting.
This latest prestigious award was made at a glitzy awards ceremony in the Grosvenor House Hotel in London’s Park Lane, and follows the top prize in the Construction News Specialist Awards 2009 earlier this year, which came just a month after BAM's work on shaft clean-up was highly commended in the 2009 Ground Engineering Awards.
Warren Jones, shaft project manager with Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd, said: “Decommissioning the shaft is a unique project that requires innovation, collaboration and a very strong emphasis on safety and environmental protection. The success of BAM Ritchies in these prestigious awards reflects great credit on the whole team who delivered this pioneering phase of the work.”
