A highly-skilled and professional workforce, making every £ work harder to reduce the hazard faster

Safety milestone for waste team

April 02, 2008

The WRACS facility for low-level waste is operated by waste services unit

Dounreay's waste services unit has clocked up a remarkable two years without a lost-time accident.

The 86-strong team deals with a variety of different wastes across the site, transporting it daily between decommissioning areas and waste facilities, and operating heavy plant.

This includes the process line for managing low-level radioactive waste generated during the decommissioning of redundant facilities and the operation of the low-level liquid effluent treatment plant.

Other activities include running facilities where waste is monitored, stored in containers or shipped off-site where appropriate.

All of this involves the routine use of machinery, vehicles and lifting gear.

In the last two years, no member of staff has been involved in an accident that caused them to miss work for three days or more.

Manager Tom Ross said: "A lot of the team use heavy plant and equipment every day, so safe working practices are vital for their protection.

"Two years without a lost-time accident is a milestone the team can be justifiably proud of. What really pleases me personally is that they seem more determined than ever now to reach the next milestone."
